Huntington HS Sophomore Wins Essay Contest Sponsored by Japan Center at Stony Brook
The Japan Center at Stony Brook University (JCSB) recently held their eighth annual essay competition, a writing contest designed to promote awareness and understanding of Japan in the United States and to help young Americans broaden their international horizons. The competition, co-sponsored by JCSB and Canon U.S.A, Inc., is separated into a high school and college division, and open to students enrolled in high school or college (undergraduate) in the New York metropolitan area. This year’s competition brought in 199 entries from 32 different high schools and two colleges.

Dr. Deng Wei Donates $1 Million for Endowed Chair in Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University received a $1 million donation from Dr. Deng Wei to establish the Yang Chen Ning – Deng Wei Endowed Chair in Physics and Astronomy. The gift was announced at a formal donation ceremony that took place in Beijing, China on May 17 attended by Nobel Laureate Dr. C.N. Yang, Dr. Deng, founder and chairman of Bright Oceans Corporation based in Beijing, Dr. Hong Chen (’91), founder of the Hina Group, and Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., President of Stony Brook University.

Investiture Ceremony Honors New Knapp Chair in Pharmacological Sciences
Basil Rigas, MD, DSc, Professor of Medicine and Pharmacological Sciences, Dean for Clinical Affairs, Vice President of Business Development, Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention at Stony Brook Medicine, and a physician-scientist specializing in gastroenterology and cancer prevention, was formally installed as the William and Jane Knapp Chair in Pharmacological Sciences during an Investiture Ceremony at Stony Brook Medicine.

The newly opened Hilton Garden Inn at Stony Brook University hosted a grand opening celebration. Festivities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony; brief remarks by Barbara Chernow, Stony Brook University Senior Vice President for Administration; Robert Frey, Stony Brook Research Professor and the Director of the Program in Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the president and CEO of Harbor Construction Management, the company that developed the property and Frank Toner, COO of Harbor Construction Management and a Stony Brook alumnus.
