2007 Brings 40+ New SOM Faculty
Chairs in Pediatrics, Pathology, Head List

This year more than 40 new faculty have joined the School of Medicine. The increase brings new expertise in cerebrovascular surgery, sleep disorders, and robotically-assisted surgery. The increase also adds to existing specialities such as Neonatology and Oncology/Hematology. Among the new faculty are two department chairs, Margaret McGovern, M.D., Ph.D.(Pediatrics), and Kenneth R. Shroyer, M.D., Ph.D. (Pathology), both of whom bring a vision for expanding departmental research and professional training.

Margaret McGovern, M.D.,Ph.D.
An expert on Niemann-Pick disease, Dr. McGovern is working to bring basic scientists and clinical researchers within the School to apply advances in genetics, pharamacology, nanotechnology and other areas to pediatric illnesses. Dr. McGovern is involved in professional training activities of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and she expects to bring additional training modules for students and residents in all 14 subspecialities.

Dr. Shroyer is an expert in Surgical and Cytopathology and recognized for translational studies in the development of novel molecular markers for treating cancer. He has launched the Pathology Translation Research Laboratory, a new core translational research program in the department. He plans to add experts in clinical chemistry, soft tissue pathology, and other surgical pathology subspecialties, all of which would provide further expertise and training in anatomic and clinical pathology.

Adding faculty remains an important component to expanding specialty care for patients, as well as for medical education, including clinical skills modules designed for medical students or special training for faculty:
