Saturday, January 12, 2008, faculty from the Lung Cancer Evaluation Center (LCEC) and associated divisions will hold a symposium titled “Lung Cancer: Update on Screening, Staging and Management.” The symposium offers CME credits and the opportunity to interact with faculty and the invited lecturer, James Jett, M.D., an internationally renowned expert in lung cancer screening and Consultant in Pulmonary Medicine and Medical Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. The symposium will take place at the
Wang
Center.
The purpose of the symposium is to review recent advances in the prevention, screening, staging, and treatment (surgical and non-surgical) of lung cancer. There will be a discussion on the importance of developing multidisciplinary teams to improve all aspects of care, from initial diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. There will also be discussions on how understanding current lung cancer research helps to optimize care for patients.
Daniel Baram, M.D., LCEC Co-Director and the symposium/course organizer, will discuss “A Multidisciplinary Approach to Multimodal Staging.” Thomas Bilfinger, M.D, Co-Director of the LCEC, will review “Partial Lobectomy, Percutaneous Ablation and Stereotactic Radiation: What do we Know? How does one Choose?”
Other faculty presentations include: “Targeted Therapy for Lung Cancer: Past, Present and Future” (Roger Keresztes, M.D.), “Percutaneous Therapy for Primary Lung Cancer” (William Moore, M.D.), and “Advances in Tobacco-related Cancer” (Theodore Gabig, M.D.). Dr. Jett of the Mayo Clinic will detail “Current Status and Future Directions of Lung Cancer Screening.”
The symposium will be presented by the LCEC, along with the Divisions of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, and the
School of
Nursing. The Office of Continuing Medical Education sponsors the symposium, offering a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA category 1 Credits.
